ESO Mentoring Program
Emerging Scholars Organization Mentorship Program
In 2014, the ESO Council established a program to provide opportunities for mentoring relationships between emerging and established scholars in southern studies. Since then, over 60 members have been connected based on research interests and professional needs. Individual mentors and mentees choose when and how they correspond, and the ESO regularly organizes a luncheon at the biennial SSSL conference for mentor/mentees to meet in person Common conversations generally involve publishing, funding and job opportunities, and general questions about the state of the field. However, discussions may also address careers outside of academia. We continue to hear from participants about the valuable experiences and relationships that this program has enabled.
If you identify as an emerging scholar and would like to join (or update your participation in) the mentorship program, please send an email with a brief description of your research interests to the ESO Mentorship Chair at firstname.lastname@example.org. The chair will forward contact information for mentees to mentors and will provide further information about the program and forthcoming opportunities. While reminders about the program are issued periodically via the SSSL listserv and social media, matches are made on a rolling basis.
